By witness accounts, the man was an innocent victim of a murderous attack on the Springwater Trail at Ochoco

DAVID F. ASHTON - Crime scene tape goes up, when a man is found deceased in the early morning of June 5th by the Springwater Trail in Sellwood.
At 1:52 a.m., on Saturday, June 5, Central Precinct police officers were dispatched to Sellwood to investigate a shooting incident near the entrance to the Springwater Trail, just off S.E. Ochoco Street. "When officers arrived, they located a deceased adult male," was the enigmatic statement from a PPB official about the incident.

It wasn't until June 14 that Homicide Division detectives revealed the name of the deceased – 45-year-old Gary O'Connor is the victim in this case. The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a "homicide by gunshot".

No other circumstances of the case have officially been made public, leading to some apprehension in the community as to whether a similar incident could occur again. There has been no police statement about whether there is any further danger to the community. No arrests have yet been made, and no suspect information is available. However, at the SMILE Board Meeting on Wednesday evening, June 17, volunteers with its Crime Prevention Committee publicly reported that, in talking with those living near the Springwater Trail, it appears that the victim was walking on the trail when he was fatally shot with no provocation. The Committee believes a police warrant has been issued; but that information is not verified. THE BEE will continue to follow this story.
