Out-of-control driver sees checkered flag, smashes into tavern
A car flew through the intersection of S.E. 82nd Avenue of Roses and Flavel Street on Thursday afternoon, October 7, struck a pedestrian and then smashed through the outdoor seating area of a tavern at the intersection. Ironically, it was the "Checkered Flag" Tavern he raced into.
Emergency medical first-responders and East Precinct officers pulled up at the northwest corner of the intersection at 2:49 p.m.
"I saw the blur of a beat-up BMW going north on 82nd, driving on the wrong side of the street and up onto the sidewalk," exclaimed witness Dan Kieuper, who told THE BEE he had been standing on the southwest corner of the intersection. "The car [continued north and] shot across the intersection, ran over a guy on the far sidewalk, and then smashed into the tavern over there."
"The officer responded to this injury crash, in which a pedestrian was transported to a local hospital – but with non-life-threatening injuries," confirmed Portland Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nathan Sheppard.
"58-year-old Russell Cuddie was arrested and charged with Driving While Suspended, and Failure to Perform the Duty of a Driver," Lt. Sheppard added. Cuddie was cited and released. The condition of the injured pedestrian has not been released, but as mentioned, he is expected to fully recover.
