The Grand Floral Rose Festival Parade will be back this year -- and Franklin's Princess will be in the parade!

DAVID F. ASHTON - Meet Franklin High Schools 2022 Portland Rose Festival Princess, Megan Bathurst! The first Portland Rose Festival event of this year in Inner Southeast Portland was on Wednesday afternoon, March 2, at Franklin High School (FHS).

Before the event got underway in the school's theater, the school's Vice Principal, Scott Burns, remarked, "Each of this year's Franklin High Portland Rose Festival Princess candidates are really dedicated, wonderful students. They have worked through this process really well, and at the same time are having fun.

"They are excited to represent our high school, every one of them!" Burns exclaimed. "Any one of them would make a awesome representative for FHS 'Lightning' spirit."

As Vice Principal Burns started the brief formal program, he recognized Portland Rose Festival staffmembers and dignitaries, and introduced last year's Franklin Portland Rose Festival Princess, Eliyana Camara.

Princess Camara recalled, "Getting together with the representatives of other schools, because of the pandemic, was scary at first, because we had so much time away from people. At the same time, being involved in community service while representing Franklin was really nice!"

Unitus Community Credit Union Mentor Corlinda Wooden then presented a memento to each of this year's FHS candidates.

With that, Principal Chris Frazier came to the podium to announce that senior Megan Bathurst had been selected to represent the school.

After her photo session, new Portland Rose Festival FHS Princess Megan Bathurst spoke with THE BEE.

"This is really important to me, because I have been super involved with everything in Franklin for the last four years, even during the pandemic," Princess Megan explained. "I feel that I can be a good representative of our school, simply put."

Being involved in Franklin student government for all four years, and having planned Teacher Appreciation Week, are points of pride with her, she acknowledged.

Princess Megan's career goal is being a high school science or STEM teacher. Her educational plans include attending Portland Community College and then transferring to Portland State University, where she will pursue a Bachelor's degree in Earth Science, and then a Master's in Secondary Education. Her plans will be aided by the $3,500 scholarship awarded by The Randall Group.
