A wild-driving car thief in Inner Southeast Portland wound up crashing into a house...before running away

COURTESY OF PPB - A recklessly-driven stolen car went over the curb and into this Brentwood-Darlington house. The car thief ran off before police arrived, and is still being sought. Residents in a Brentwood-Darlington home at the corner of S.E. 70th Avenue at Duke Street were startled awake just before midnight on Sunday, February 20, when what sounded to other neighbors like a bomb blast shook their home.

A fire crew was dispatched at 11:50 p.m. that evening on a "Vehicle into a Structure" report. East Precinct officers were also sent to the location less than a minute later.

As it turned out, a speeding driver had jumped the curb and mowed down a picket fence before slamming into the side of the house.

"A stolen car crashed into the side of the house; however the driver of the vehicle fled before police arrived," a PPB official told THE BEE. "Thankfully, no one in the house was injured." Officers are still looking for the car thief, who faces a host of charges in the felony hit-and-run.
