A new children's dental practice has now opened in the Woodstock neighborhood

ELIZABETH USSHER GROFF - Dr. David Raphael performs a first-time dental exam on two-year old Emma June Traylor, in the new Woodstock Boulevard pediatric dental office at 52nd Avenue. Some children actually like going to the dentist. Imagine that.

Toys, kindness, cheerfulness, and even overhead movies help young children consider a trip to the dentist to be no big deal.

A new children's dentistry practice has opened in the Woodstock neighborhood, offering "comfortable tooth and gum care for children from infancy to adolescence". Portland Children's Dentistry, which has had an office in Northwest Portland for four years, is branching out to serve Southeast Portland from this new office.

According to a spokesperson, the goals of the practice are "to educate children and parents about the benefits of a healthy diet, good brushing and flossing habits, and regular dental checkups. And to make dental visits fun."

The new office, located at 5216 S.E. Woodstock Boulevard, has two dentists who split alternate days during the week. Both Dr. David Raphael and Dr. Patricia Peirano Franklin did their training in pediatric dentistry at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) and have extensive experience with children. Both Spanish and Romanian are spoken in addition to English.

"Dr. David", as he is called by his staff and clients, grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and went to Tufts University where he did undergraduate studies in Biopsychology. He then earned a Master's degree in Child Development.

Along the way he also served as Assistant Professor at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in the Pediatric Dentistry Department, and as a Board Member of the nonprofit "Smile Oregon", where he has learned to serve children with cleft and craniofacial conditions.

"Dr. Patty" was born in Santiago, Chile, where she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. After practicing there for five years, she moved to Portland and went to OHSU to complete her fellowship and specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry. She also served as an Assistant Professor at OHSU and is the past president of the Oregon Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Both dentists have a strong commitment to community service. Dr. David has gone on dental missions to India, Bolivia and Guatemala and is active in community service projects in the Portland area. Dr. Patty volunteers frequently at free clinics and has gone twice to Haiti, once for five months of service. Coincidentally, both dentists have families with two young sons who keep them busy and in tune with the developmental stages of children.

Business hours for the new Woodstock practice are: Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday appointments are subject to availability. Closed on Sundays.
