Just before school closures began, St. Agatha School in Sellwood was presenting 'Mary Poppins' on stage

DAVID F. ASHTON - Its the big finish to the rousing number, Chim Chim Cheree - In the St. Agatha Catholic School stage production of Marry Poppins. On the weekend of March 6th and 7th, Sellwood's St. Agatha Catholic School presented "Mary Poppins, Jr.", based on the Broadway musical taken from the stories of P. L. Travers, and the Oscar-winning 1964 Walt Disney Studios film.

As the student actors and crew prepared for a matinee performance on Saturday afternoon, March 7, the school's Principal – Chris Harris – was all smiles. "This is the third year of preparing and presenting a musical production here at St. Agatha; and each year, it's grown!

"This year it's a wonderful collaboration with the 'Young People's Theater Project', a nonprofit children's theater headquartered in Beaverton, which has provided the director, sets, costumes, and technical elements that give our students a full theatrical experience."

The student actors had been rehearsing for about 2½ months, the Principal said – with 40 students involved, from grades three through eight. "What I love about this is it's not just about learning lines and being an actor; it's the children learning to develop their confidence and skills beyond just working with theater projects.

"It's great to see all the students from different grades helping each other, as they learn their parts – it's wonderful to see them develop into a competent ensemble," Harris remarked.

The audience was treated to energetic, well-executed dance routines, and tapped their toes to famous songs from the musical, including "Chim Chim Cheree", "A Spoonful of Sugar", and of course, "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" – as chimney sweep Bert, and magical nanny Mary Poppins, frolicked on imaginary London rooftops.
