A Valentine's Week celebration at Sellwood Community House was cut a little short by the weather

DAVID F. ASHTON - Classical Ballet Academy student Fiona Weiss performed Classical Variation, outdoors at Sellwood Community House. Its from the Ballet Don Quixote. With bright warming sunshine, the week leading up to Valentine's Day seemed ideal for outdoor programming at Sellwood Community House (SCH).

"We're calling the week of February 8th through 12th our 'Free Love Week', with activities scheduled each day," beamed SCH Director of Programs and Development Elizabeth Milner, as the week got underway in their outdoor pavilion.

Events included a "Story Time" by noted local author Rose Collins; a Lunar New Year presentation by the Portland Puppet Theater Museum; a local artists' outdoor bazaar; and dance presentations by students from Classical Ballet Academy.

"We're offering as many free events for the public as we can, even during the days of COVID-19, as a way to get people to safely come out, enjoy the weather, be entertained," Milner told THE BEE.

That was the plan. However, as every BEE reader will vividly recall, the weather turned decidedly wintery before the end of the week. The "Salsa Dance!" classes to be offered by Dance With Joy Studios on Thursday afternoon in the pavilion, and live fiddlers scheduled for on Friday afternoon, were cancelled due to the record-setting sleet, snow, and ice storms that swept through the area.

At least the events earlier in the week took place, and there will be more public events in the near future. Go online to learn more –
