When the city is slow about replacing trees they remove in Eastmoreland, the neighbors just do it themselves

DAVID F. ASHTON - Here, celebrating the newly-planted Linden tree, are ENA Tree Committee Chair Jerry Beatty, ENA Greenspaces Task Force Chair Todd Bauman, committee member Karen Tosi, and Reed College Place Committee Chair Robert McCullough. Time has taken its toll on the 257 trees that shade the "Linden Allée", stretching down the middle of S.E. Reed College Place. Despite that, it continues to be the landmark feature of the Eastmoreland neighborhood that it has been for 110 years.

Over the decades, neighbors have donated to an Eastmoreland Neighborhood Association (ENA) committee for the maintenance all of their "street trees", because such regular attention was long-ago abandoned by the City of Portland

And so it was that on Tuesday, February 22, a number of neighbors came out to celebrate the "birth" of a new tree which had just been planted.

"We're here, near the intersection of S.E. Reed College Place and Tolman Street, to celebrate this new tree," announced ENA Tree Committee Chair Jerry Beatty to the assembled crowd.

He, and the others, admired the young "little leaf Linden" (Tilia cordata) on the west side of the Allée. "I was asked to find a tree to replace one that was removed by Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) Urban Forestry," Beatty explained. "They were not planning to get around to replacing the tree for a couple of years – so we took charge, in a community effort to replace the tree.

"We got a PP&R permit to do it, Reed College Place Committee Chair Robert McCullough specified and paid for the tree, and together we've planted this tree!"

And with the above photo we introduce the new tree to you.
