Here's an update on the status of a few neighborhood road improvement plans brought to you by the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT).
WHAT - SW Vermont Street Paving and Curb Work
WHERE - SW Vermont St. from SW 30th to SW 65th
WHEN - Work began back in July and is scheduled to be completed
by the end of November.
WHO'S AFFECTED? - Anyone who lives or travels near SW Vermont St from Hoot Owl Market to just south of Alpenrose. PBOT estimates there are 8,000 vehicle trips a day on that stretch of SW Vermont including those by Tri Met LInes 1, 45 and 64. Walkers and runners will have sidewalks available along Vermont when completed.
WHAT'S THE COST - $3.15 million.
WHAT - SW Capitol Highway: Multnomah Village to West Portland
WHERE -Capitol Highway between the Multnomah Village sign on the south end of the bridge over Multnomah Boulevard and World Foods on Barbur
WHEN - Work expected to begin in November 2019 and be completed a year later.
WHO'S AFFECTED? - Anyone who lives or travels in Multnomah, basically. And then some.
WHAT'S THE COST - $25 million (est.)
NOTE - This is the Big One for next year in terms of infrastructure work in SW Portland. Capitol Highway along this stretch south of Multnomah Village will be transformed. There will be bike lanes and sidewalks when the project is completed in November 2020 (est.).
WHAT - SW Capitol Highway: Huber to Kerr Parkway Complete Streets Project
WHERE - Capitol Highway just south of Barbur Blvd to the border with Lake Oswego
WHEN - Construction scheduled to start in the Spring of 2019.
WHO'S AFFECTED? - Those who commute by car or bus along Capitol Highway
south of Barbur Boulevard. PBOT says l8,000 average vehicles per day (both directions) drive that stretch. People who drive and walk and ride to and from the Highway from the local neighborhods.
WHAT'S THAT COST - $275,000 (est.)
NOTE - That stretch of Capitol Highway is considered a High Crash Corridor. The planned work will result in a lower speed limit (35 to 30 mph), three lanes instead of four lanes, better bike lanes and two new pedestrian crossings. So the effects will be long term.
