Stay calm and pet the llama
The Capitol Highway sidewalk was jammed from curb to storefront with kids and adults on a sun-drenched Saturday morning in mid-November.
There were complimentary Sesame donuts and glasses of chilled orange juice available. But the refreshments weren't the main attraction. For the dozens who formed an impromptu line north from Peachtree Gifts, the big draw was Rojo the Therapy Llama.
Peachtree proprietor Petrel Farkas says bringing Rojo to Multnomah Village was her idea.
"I was wanting to spread some joy and thought what better way to do that than to have a llama at the store to kick off the holidays," she said.
Rojo is a regular at local hospitals and rest homes, where his soothing presence proves welcome. Eleven years ago, he became the first llama certified as a therapy animal by DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital.
