First Tuesday in August means National Night Out in Southwest Portland
Multiple events giving locals an opportunity to mix with cops and firefighters on National Night Out will be held in Southwest Portland from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6.
National Night Out (NNO) started almost four decades ago as the one night each year when people who had them were urged to turn on their porch lights at night and spend some time outside.
With the cooperation of public safety agencies, community groups and faith communities, NNO is observed in an estimated 16,000 communities across America. According to the National Association of Town Watch, which launched the idea, 38 million people will participate in some way. In Oregon, it's projected that NNO gatherings will occur in 74 cities.
In Southwest Portland, neighborhood associations have been the driving force behind efforts on the first Tuesday in August to bring citizens together in a non-crisis environment with men and women in law enforcement and public safety. Ice cream seems to be the one feature that most of these events have in common and many of the organizers are urging people to bring a dish for a neighborhood pot luck.
Here is a list of NNO events for Aug. 6. They generally begin at 6 p.m. and last until 8 p.m.
