Changes at top at several public schools in Southwest Portland
Public school students who live and learn in Southwest Portland are back at it.
The last days of August saw them getting reacquainted with, or introduced to, new school day routines while students, faculty and staff at five local public schools — including Wilson High School — were getting acquainted with new principals.
Filip Hristic takes over at Wilson after a tumultuous year, during which a popular principal resigned and his interim replacement left under still-unexplained circumstances. Hristic spent the last five years as principal at Roosevelt High School in North Portland. He and his family live in the Multnomah neighborhood.
Susan Kosmala will become the new principal at Jackson Middle School. She's been with Portland Public Schools for 15 years. For the last four years she's been principal at Buckman Elementary in Southeast Portland. Jackson will be her first west side assignment. Her successor, Kevin Crotchett, took a job in the school district's central offices dealing with information technology. Kosmala earned bachelor of music degrees in education and clarinet from the University of Hartford.
Eryn Berg will be the new principal of the Odyssey Program. The Odyssey Program is a focus option for Portland Public Schools serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Berg will succeed Deanne Froehlich, who has been principal of both Odyssey and Hayhurst Elementary School for 10 years. Berg served as assistant principal at Alameda Elementary since 2015. Before that she was an assistant principal at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego.
Froehlich had been principal at Hayhurst (K-5) and Oddysey (K-8) for the last decade. Here's what she wrote to Hayhurst parents in her last newsletter: "The time has come that I will be making a transition to another school. I have accepted the principal position for Lewis Elementary School in Southeast Portland. I will begin this chapter of my career on July 1, 2019. Change is difficult, but can also be very positive. I like to have that outlook on all aspects of life."
No new principal has been named for Hayhurst as this issue of the SW Connection goes to press.
Aimee Alexander-Shea will be the new principal at Capitol Hill Elementary School. She served as an assistant principal at Gresham High School since 2015. Kevin Walker, who served as Capitol Hill principal last year, takes over as principal at Rosa Parks Elementary School.
Jonathan Jeans, a 16-year veteran of Portland Public Schools, will become the new principal at Rieke Elementary School. Jeans served as assistant principal at Robert Gray Middle School for the last six years. Rieke is the feeder school for Robert Gray within the Wilson High School cohort. Jeans replaces Sarah Lewins, who retired after 21 years with the district, the last three at Rieke.
