Jamie Bernstein featured speaker at Mittelman author series to talk about her dad

The daughter of the man who did so much to make classical music accessible for millions of Americans in the 1950s and 1960s, will be the featured speaker at the Mittelman Jewish Community Center's author series on Monday, Nov. 11.

Jamie Bernstein wrote a book about growing up as one of three children of the celebrity composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein and called it "Famous Father Girl." The New York Times review called the book a "wry and wonderful memoir."

In it, Jamie writes of what it was like growing up in Manhattan surrounded by famous people like the Kennedys, Lauren Bacall, Mike Nichols and Stephen Sondheim. She was once brought home from summer camp so she could meet the Beatles when they came to America.

Her appearance is part of the current exhibition "Bernstein at 100" at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education. Jamie Bernstein is a writer, narrator, broadcaster, and filmmaker. Her father, who died in October 1990 at the age of 72, is generally regarded as one of America's greatest musical talents. He wrote the score for the movie "West Side Story," in addition to three symphonies, and conducted most of the world's leading orchestras. He authored the book "The Joy of Music."

A reviewer of "Famous Father Girl" in Vanity Fair wrote, "An intimate look at the famous, and famously private, musician, whose 7 Emmys only begin to scratch the surface of his musical achievements."
