Grocer announces grand opening date for Garden Home store at site of former Lamb's Thriftway

PMG FILE PHOTO: COURTNEY VAUGHN - A new Trader Joe's grocery story is slated to occupy the Garden Home Marketplace plaza in Southwest Portland. The store will open Oct. 29.Westside Portlanders will finally have their own Trader Joe's grocery store to shop at. After years of anticipation, a new store is opening Friday, Oct. 29, in the Garden Home Marketplace plaza on Southwest Garden Home Road.

The company stayed mum about its opening date until shortly before releasing news of a grand opening ceremony set for 8 a.m. Oct. 29. A company representative said as recently as Oct. 6 that no opening date had been set. That changed Friday, Oct. 22.

The new, 11,000-square-foot store marks the fourth Trader Joe's location in Portland, and the ninth in the Portland metro region. Currently, there are a dozen other Trader Joe's stores in Oregon and 500 across the United States.

The beloved California-based grocery chain, which has earned a reputation for its model of never advertising and rarely fluctuating prices of its products, replaces a Lamb's Thriftway store that closed in the plaza in 2019.

"As a neighborhood grocery store, Trader Joe's prides itself on hiring from the local community," a news release from the company states. "Roughly 95% of crew members at the new store are from the area. In addition, through the company's longstanding Neighborhood Shares Program, the Southwest Portland Trader Joe's will donate 100% of products that go unsold but remain fit to enjoy to a range of nonprofit, community-based organizations, seven days a week."

The new store will be managed by Mark Sakamoto, whose career with the company spans 20 years.
