A private, citizen-led committee to rename the pool at the Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School campus is slated to vote on a name in early May.
The Committee to Rename Wilson Pool, which has gotten sponsorship from the Hillsdale Neighborhood Association and Hillsdale Business Association, has been soliciting name suggestions for the pool for the past two months. To date, 21 new names have been nominated.
"We are now asking the community to vote online on their preferred name for the pool," said Don Baack, organizer of the pool renaming committee.
Voting closes May 1.
While the high school was renamed from Wilson High School to Ida B. Wells-Barnett High in 2021, the pool at its campus still retains the old name.
The committee plans to vote on a name preferred by the community, then submit that recommendation to the city of Portland for consideration.
"Since Portland Parks & Recreation owns the pool, they have the final say in the selected name," Baack said. "We hope to have a new name confirmed by early fall 2022."
Baack said the nine-member committee will review the votes on May 9 and forward the name with the highest vote to the city for consideration. If there isn't a clear frontrunner, a runoff election will be held to solicit additional votes based on the most popular options from the first round of voting.
Baack, who founded and operates the SW Trails PDX hiking group, said the SW Trails site hosting the voting for the committee.
