Healthy fare, Packers memorabilia abound at sustainable seafood restaurant

PHOTO COURTESY OF JON ELLIS - Corbett Fish House serves a wide variety of healthy, sustainable seafood.Who doesn’t love a delicious meal of fish and chips? However, the problem with that particular combo is that it’s usually unhealthy, fattening and completely out of reach for the gluten-free set.

Though fans of our local teams might be taken aback by the plethora of Green Bay Packers paraphernalia decorating the low-key space — and possibly a Packers game airing in the background — they’ll forgive owners Dana and Greg Boyce (the latter a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin) when they taste the goods.

First of all, the fish served at Corbett is all from sustainable fisheries, following the guidelines of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. And there are so many options to choose from.

When ordering the fish-and-chips meals, you can decide among Pacific Alaska Cod, Yellow Perch from the Great Lakes, Alaska Halibut or Salmon, Mississippi Catfish, Oysters, Walleye, Prawns, Clam Strips or Sea Scallops, all from various exotic locations. The fish is dredged in brown rice flour and flash-fried in rice bran oil.

I won’t bore you by repeating the manifesto on the menu about why that makes the fish healthy and essentially oil-free, because the bottom line is, it’s delicious.

If you’re still resisting the idea of fried food, there are very reasonably-priced and spectacularly delicious grilled choices of salmon and cod, as well as fish tacos, salads, soups and chowder. In other words, it’s basically a fish lover’s dream.

They also have killer onion rings, the fries are wonderful and they do a to-die-for calamari. And in case I wasn’t clear yet, everything in the place is gluten-free, with the exception of several beers on the vast beer/wine list that boasts plenty of local selections.

But wait, that’s not all! The desserts (drum roll, please) include raw, vegan cheesecakes from Rawdacious Desserts, cupcakes from Piece of Cake Bakery in Sellwood — an honored place in my heart that deserves a sincerity write-up of its very own — a few in-house-made treats, and, of course, ice cream.

The atmosphere at Corbett Fish House is laid-back and relaxed, with a bar that has a friendly, “Cheers” vibe. The servers are attentive, service is fast and though I think it’s a fun place for a date, it’s also a great place to bring the kids. It’s been a favorite of my teenage nephew for years, as he is both gluten- and peanut-intolerant. Here, he can feel safe that there’s no cross-contamination from gluten, or that something’s been sneakily fried in peanut oil.

If you happen to find yourself in Southeast Portland, the same menu is served at the Hawthorne Fish House; in Washington, it’s served at the East Vancouver Fish House. I’m happy to know that there’s a place to get my fish-and-chips fix in more than one locale, but as I usually hang out in Southwest, the Corbett Fish House is rapidly becoming one of my top eateries in the Rose City.
