Neighborhood-led group aimed at finding new name for Southwest Portland pool reaches decision

PMG PHOTO: COURTNEY VAUGHN - A lifeguard strolls the Wilson Pool in Southwest Portland. A group of Hillsdale residents has come up with a suggested new name for the community pool at the Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School campus. The community has spoken. The Wilson Pool should be renamed the Hillsdale Pool.

As a result of the vote, where 66% of the 365 voters selected "Hillsdale Pool" as the new name for the Wilson Pool at the Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School campus, the committee will be recommending to Portland Parks & Recreation and the Portland City Council that the Wilson Pool be renamed the Hillsdale Pool. The city owns the pool and will have the final say in what it is called.

As you may recall, the committee sought name nominations for two months and 19 unique names were proposed. We then held a one-month online vote to seek the community view of what the name should be. It was overwhelming in favor of Hillsdale Pool.

The announcements seeking nominations and opportunities were submitted to the SWNI News, The SW Connection, the Hillsdale News and Nextdoor to give everyone an opportunity to weigh in on the decision.

Thanks to all who participated in the Rename the Pool Committee.
