BonamiciRep. Suzanne Bonamici, the Democrat who represents Oregon’s 1st District, said she is joining other members of the state’s congressional delegation in forgoing her congressional salary during the partial government shutdown, The Oregonian reported Tuesday, Oct. 8.

A spokesman for Bonamici confirmed in an email interview with the Spotlight that Columbia County’s congresswoman has asked that her pay be withheld until the shutdown ends and federal agencies deemed “nonessential” reopen.

“Rep. Bonamici is having her pay withheld until the shutdown has ended, but she understands that paycheck or no paycheck, Congress as an institution has failed to fulfill its most basic responsibility and the American people are unfortunately suffering the consequences,” Bonamici spokesman Mike Morosi wrote Tuesday. “That’s why she continues to call on Speaker [John] Boehner to allow a yes or no vote on reopening the government.”

The shutdown began at the start of the month, as Republicans and Democrats failed to agree on a budget resolution to keep the government funded, amid House Republicans’ insistence that any deal to fund the government include cuts to the controversial Affordable Care Act, which is President Barack Obama’s signature health care reform law.

Obama and Senate leaders have said they will not negotiate over health care or the budget until the House passes a measure to reopen the government and prevent a national debt default.

Bonamici’s congressional salary is $174,000 per year.
