Rotary fountain designed by renowned Scappoose artist regains momentum

Scappoose’s Heritage Park will begin to see its long-awaited fountain come to fruition as the new year kicks off.

The Scappoose City Council voted unanimously Nov. 18 to allow the local Rotary International chapter to move forward with a Heritage Park project that has been on the docket for at least four years.

Scappoose Mayor Scott Burge said the fountain has been in the works for some time, and has been mostly pushed forward by local volunteers.

“It’s been since at least 2010, and that’s probably not when it started. I think it was even before that,” he said. “It’s been delayed as they’re working with volunteers.”

Crews from the Northwest College of Construction are slated to begin construction on the Heritage Park fountain as early as Jan. 17, said Gary Liao, president of the Columbia County Rotary Club.

“Last I heard, it looks like we’re still on schedule and the [Northwest] College of C onstruction will be holding their classes and moving forward,” he said. “We have material estimates that are within our budget.”

Liao also said he’s hoping for a completion date in May 2015.

“If things go as planned, it will be complete a year from May,” Liao added. “Ideally, I think everyone wants it complete by 2015.”

The fountain was designed as a donation by Michael Curry and his world-renowned design studio in Scappoose. Liao said the Scappoose Community Club and State Sen. Betsy Johnson both pledged $5,000 for the project, the city of Scappoose has also approved $40,000 for the fountain.

“We believe we have enough to proceed,” Liao said, speaking of the $50,000 secured for the initial construction.
