Buddy Poppies are artificial flowers distributed by the VFW to be worn to show support for veterans.

“The funds we raise enable us to assist veterans in need,” said Tom Ford, commander of the Scappoose VFW, speaking about how money raised may go to temporary housing, beds, food and more. “We connect them to the Veterans Association and other agencies that assist veterans. There’s a lot of help out there for people that don’t know it, particularly for people with [post-traumatic stress disorder] and alcoholism. We get them at the end of their tether and help them.”

The Scappoose VFW will distribute Buddy Poppies and take donations Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at various locations in Scappoose, including the Scappoose Post Office, Fred Meyer, Grocery Outlet and Ichabod’s Restaurant.

“We’re always helping out our veterans in need and that means we need to remain positive,” Ford said as a final note about the campaign. “We have to make sure these guys get what they were promised.”
