Driver led deputy through St. Helens before being held at gunpoint and arrested for DUII, reckless driving

A man was arrested by Columbia County sheriff's deputies Wednesday evening after he evaded a traffic stop and led a deputy on a brief high-speed chase in St. Helens.

West Daniel Anthony West, 48, of St. Helens, was reportedly driving a 2004 Buick LeSabre at around 80 miles an hour on Pittsuburg Road near Allendale Drive at 9:54 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputy Ryan Dews tried to stop West's car as it darted down Edie's Way, then onto Columbia Boulevard, before getting back on Pittsburg Road and yielding to the deputy a few minutes later at 9:56 p.m., Columbia County Sheriff's Office records show.

"He eventually gave up and pulled over," Columbia County Sheriff Jeff Dickerson noted.

Deputy Dews had West at gunpoint when he finally yielded, but became non-cooperative, incident call details shows. The deputy finally got the man out of the car and on the ground.

West had no passengers in his car and was arrested and booked into Columbia County Jail on charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and attempt to elude police.
