Cause of garage fire that spread to roof of home, leaving smoke damage that displaced occupants remains under investigation

Scappoose firefighters responded to a fire at a home in the 51000 block of Southwest 4th Street early Sunday morning, Dec. 3.

The fire displaced five people.Around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, fire crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from an attached garage at the home, spreading to the roof, according to Scappoose Fire District.

Firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading throughout the rest of the home, but heavy smoke damage was reported to the single story structure.

"Five occupants are currently displaced," a news release from the fire district states, adding, "they have declined an offer of Red Cross support."

No injuries were reported and the home was insured, the release states. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Three fire engines and three support vehicles responsed to the scene, including an engine from Columbia River Fire and Rescue.
