Screening committee held first meeting to review 28 applications that were submitted

The screening committee, which is comprised of school board members, district staff, teachers and parents, held a special meeting Monday, March 5, to go through a short orientation before reviewing the applications, which were submitted to a consulting group by the Feb. 28 deadline.

Monday's meeting was led by Mike Taylor, a consultant with Next-Up Leadership, a superintendent search consulting firm the school district contracted with last summer to help in the recruitment and hiring process.

After the brief public meeting, the committee convened a closed executive session to review the applications. Committee members were asked to select their top candidate choices, which will then be confidentially submitted to the consultants.

Results will be presented to the school board Monday, March 12, during a special meeting to determine candidates the district wants to "keep talking to," Taylor explained. At that point, the board will decide how to narrow the application field based on the committee's feedback.

Board Chair Phil Lager said the board would likely narrow the field down to eight to 10 candidates with whom to schedule a first round of interviews

Closed interviews will likely be scheduled for the end of the month, followed by a series of public interviews in early April. Those dates will be determined by candidate availability, Taylor explained.

Advertising for the superintendent position was focused on the Northwest region of the country, Taylor explained, but candidates applied from all over. Still, the majority came from Oregon or neighboring states, he said.

A typical recruitment effort yields around 25 applicants, he added, so the number submitted for Scappoose was slightly greater.

Interim Superintendent Ron Alley would not say if he applied for the full-time position at this time.

"I can't respond to that question because I don't feel it would be equitable for anyone who is involved in the process," Alley stated by email Wednesday.

Alley was appointed to the interim superintendent position last summer after the departure of former Superintendent Stephen Jupe, who resigned with a year left on his contract. Alley was appointed to the director of curriculum, instruction, assessment and secondary education position during Jupe's tenure.
