New assistant principal joins St. Helens
The St. Helens School District has hired a new high school administrator for the 2018-19 school year.
Darcy Soto is the new assistant principal at St. Helens High School, filling the vacancy of Cris Gwilliam, who has transitioned to serve as the full-time principal at St. Helens Middle School.
Soto will join incoming Principal Katy Wagner and current Assistant Principal Ron Hernley. Wagner was announced as the new St. Helens High principal in April.
Soto previously worked at Corbett High School. During her in time in Corbett she helped increase student participation in advanced placement and college dual enrollment courses in the Spanish department. She also served as an instructional coach for other teachers. According to Soto's professional profile on LinkedIn, she additionally taught Spanish at Mountain View High School for two years.
Soto earned her bachelor's degree in Spanish from Portland State University and spent five years teaching in rural communities in central Mexico. She also taught English at the Universidad Tecnológica del Norte de Guanajuato, her LinkedIn profile states.
Soto earned a master's degree in education from PSU and an administrative license from Concordia University.
"Her passion for service in education is based on the principle of educational equity and she is a strong advocate for supporting all students to achieve high levels of success," a press release from the school district stated.
Soto is a native Oregonian who has two daughters, is an avid runner, and enjoys local music, arts and pastries, the release added.
