Individual events provide Frank Weber, 94, with personal performance goals

SPOTLIGHT PHOTO: DARRYL SWAN - Frank Weber, 94, has competed in 13 annual Washington State Senior Games, specifically in track and field events. Weber served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Coloardo. Scappoose's Frank Weber took home three golds and a silver medal after competing in the Washington State Senior Games on Saturday, July 21.

Weber, 94, traveled to Tumwater, Washington, for the annual competition. He won gold in the track and field categories of shotput, javelin and discus, and secured a silver for his effort in the softball throw.

"I like competition and you meet a lot of people," Weber said. "They had a lot of competition. I was surprised."

Weber, a World War II veteran who served on the USS Colorado, has faced off against other competitors in his age group at the games for 13 years. Next year will pose a new challenge for him: competing in the bracket reserved for athletes 95-99 years old.

In addition to enjoying the competitive spirit present at the games, Weber said the individual events provide him with personal performance goals.

"I think it's really good," he said.
