The Highway 30 Cruisers are expecting more than 100 cars to be on display during a car show next weekend at the annual Wings & Wheels event at the Scappoose airport. From hotrods to chromed classics, a car show hosted by the Highway 30 Cruisers is sure to have it all.

The Highway 30 Cruisers will be hosting a car show next weekend during the Scappoose Wings & Wheels festival Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This year, organizers are expecting more than 100 entries. Anyone who is interested in showing a vehicle can register the day of the event starting at 8 a.m. There is a $20 registration fee.

Instead of handing out traditional awards for various car makes, models and years, organizers this year are allowing businesses to sponsor 50 awards and then select their favorite vehicles.

This is the first time the Highway 30 Cruisers have tried "sponsor choice" awards, but organizers hope it will provide a fun atmosphere and encourage sponsors to attend the eighth annual Wings & Wheels.

"This gives us a little more leeway. There's a little less competition ... and it also lets people that sponsor (awards) come out and pick what they like," said Rob Renner, president of the Highway 30 Cruisers.

A variety of businesses have pledged money for the awards and will be able to pick their favorites from what's on display. Renner added that two awards will be handed out for people's choice and participant's choice as well.

Club treasurer Jan Reed said she is looking forward to this year's Wings & Wheels and its collaboration with the Northwest Antique Airplane Club and the numerous vendors who will be selling food and goods.

"We're really looking forward to the combo of more attendance and more vendors," Reed said. "I think it'll be a really good event for everyone."

When they're not preparing for car shows, the Highway 30 Cruisers meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Kozy Korner in St. Helens to discuss club activity and upcoming events.

During summer months, the club participates in cruise-ins, events where club members drive around town and visit various businesses. Anyone who comes to a cruise-in event can also take part in a series of giveaway raffles too, Renner said.

"It's really just a way to get people into the community and enjoy local businesses downtown," Renner said.
