Scappoose Fire District firefighters were dispatched at 2:21 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, to the 32000 block of Apple Valley Road when a fire was report-

When crews arrived they found an SUV and shop on fire with flames extending to the nearby house. Firefighters were able to prevent the flames from getting inside the house, according to a social media post by SFD. The flames caused significant damage to the side of the house, however.

The two residents of the house were able to get out and were not injured, according to information from SFD.

Fire crews spent several hours at the scene working to put out hotspots after the fire was extinguished. A narrow roadway and limited access to the site made it difficult for crews to contain the fire, the social media post added.

Columbia River People's Utility District also responded to turn off electricity to the house.

The shop and SUV were declared a total loss. According to several social media comments made by neighbors assisting the two people affected by the fire, the occupants were able to also get their two dogs out of the home, but several pet chickens did not survive.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
