The Scappoose School District board of directors is looking for someone to fill a vacancy on the school board.
Angela Schilleriff, who was first elected to the school board in 2011, submitted a letter to the board earlier this month announcing her departure, citing health concerns and the need to recover from an upcoming surgery.
"I have enjoyed working with you, the SSD board and our wonderful staff this past seven and half years to serve the need of our great community," Schillereff stated in a letter addressed to board chair Phil Lager. "Though it has been challenging at times, I feel confident that we have done the best for our students, given the current financial situation we face with the state of Oregon and its legislature."
Schillereff will resign her position effective Oct. 15. She was elected to represent Zone 2, which includes all of Sauvie Island and eastern and northern portions of Scappoose. During a meeting Monday, Oct. 8, the school board voted to accept the resignation and declared a vacancy on the board.
Schillereff was absent from Monday's meeting and did not reply to a request for further comment by the Spotlight's press time.
During the board meeting Monday, board members expressed appreciation for Schillereff's work over the years and said although they were disappointed to see her go, they were understanding of the situation.
Board members Will Kessi and Michelle Graham expressed appreciation for Schillereff's business mindset, student focus, thoughtfulness and integrity.
The position will remain open for several weeks while the board accepts applications from interested people. Applicants will be interviewed at a school board meeting on Nov. 13, and then someone will be selected to fill the role until the end of Schillereff's term in June.
Applicants are required to live in the school district boundaries for at least a year. Applicants must also live within Zone 2 of the district and may not be district employees. Applications and letters of interest may be turned in before Oct. 30.
