The county's Meals on Wheels programs rely heavily on volunteers to deliver meals. In Clatskanie, one woman has been helping out for nearly 40 years.

Del Dyer, of Clatskanie, was named volunteer of the month for September by the Columbia County Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Dyer has spent decades volunteering with several charitable service organizations.

"The Lord's blessed me with the ability to do it," Dyer told RSVP. "My husband was a shift worker at Georgia Pacific so I could volunteer. Volunteering's been my whole life actually."

Dyer says she's volunteered at Turning Point Food Bank and was involved with Christian Interfaith for many years.

"She used to make the long drive to give out coffee and cookies to weary travelers at the Toutle Rest Stop in Castle Rock, Wash.," Monica Cade, director of RSVP, notes.

Dyer was greeted by members of the My Fair Lady court and presented with the volunteer recognition award. Dyer also served on the MFL court herself in 2006.

"Del is one of our weekly (MOW) drivers," Joy Green, director of the Clatskanie Senior Center, says of Dyer. "She's always there when we need her. She's very personable with the people. She doesn't just drop off a meal; she takes an interest in them."

RSVP reminds the public that local senior centers are always looking for volunteers to help deliver for Meals on Wheels. For more information or to get involved, call RSVP at 503-397-5655 to be connected with the nearest center.
