Scappoose police respond to school bus incident
Officers from Scappoose Police Department were called to an incident involving a school bus Monday afternoon, Nov. 19.
The school district notified parents Monday that someone had approached a school bus while it was taking students home in the afternoon, which caused the driver of the bus to call for police assistance.
Officials sent out a notification to parents explaining that an unidentified adult approached a school bus near the Scappoose Middle School. The driver of the bus quickly closed the doors of the bus and contacted law enforcement. All children on the bus were delivered home after the incident and the situation was quickly resolved.
"Thanks to Durham and Scappoose Police for their quick reaction in making sure our students got home safely," the notification from the school district stated, in part.
Durham School Services is the district's school bus service provider.
Several parents commented on social media that their children were on the bus when the situation occurred. The students described seeing someone following the school bus in a vehicle that would stop whenever the bus would.
It's not clear if the driver of the vehicle was arrested or issued any citations, or why the person was following the bus. Limited information about the incident was provided by the school district and the police department prior to the Spotlight's holiday-adjusted press deadline.
