A Rainier man was killed Saturday, Nov. 24, after he was struck by a passenger vehicle while trying to recover personal items on Highway 30, just north of Goble.

James Gotcher, 73, of Rainier, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash Saturday, according to information from Oregon State Police.

OSP and medical personnel responded to a call for a pedestrian-versus-vehicle crash around 3 p.m. near milepost 42 on the highway.

Gotcher was traveling as a passenger in an eastbound pickup truck. He had exited the vehicle at some point to help recover personal property from the roadway that had been lost. While attempting to recover an item, Gotcher was struck by a pickup truck traveling westbound that was being operated by Joseph Salvey, 45, of Rainier, according to preliminary investigation information.

Reports from KOIN 6 also indicate that an off-duty trooper passed the crash and tried to administer assistance; however, Gotcher died at the scene.
