The local St. Helens winners of the annual "If I Were Mayor Contest" which is hosted by the Oregon Mayor's Association, were recognized on Wednesday, May 1 at a city council meeting.

Matthias Bean was the winner of the poster contest for grades 4-5 and Madeline Clark was the winner of the middle school essay contest. Giovanna Anderson was too young to be qualified for the contest for grades 4-5, but the council deemed her entry worthy of an honorable mention in the poster contest. No entries were submitted for the high school contest.

Winners of the local contest win $100 and lunch with the mayor. Anderson was also invited to attend the lunch. The local winning entries are then submitted to a statewide contest where they are eligible to win the grand prize, an iPad Air.
