Man suspected of January 2018 bank robbery in Scappoose convicted in federal court

COURTESY PHOTO - Sanchez-Lopez Diego Sanchez-Lopez, also known as the "Froggy Robber," on Monday pleaded guilty in federal court to six counts of bank robbery, including the January 2018 robbery of a bank in Scappoose.

Sanchez-Lopez, 24, stole more than $87,000 between November 2017 and April 2018 from six banks in Oregon and Southwest Washington, according to Department of Justice press release Monday, Aug. 5. In each of the robberies, Sanchez-Lopez hopped over the bank teller counter and wielded a knife at bank employees, prompting law enforcement officials to coin him the "Froggy Robber."

He was indicted on the bank robbery charges in September.

On the morning of Jan. 30, 2018, Sanchez-Lopez stole $6,720 from the U.S. Bank in Scappoose, the press release states. Witnesses reported that he "jumped the teller counter and threatened bank employees with a knife, demanded cash, received cash and left the bank," noted an FBI news release at the time. Nearby Scappoose schools were placed in lockdown as law enforcement officials, assisted by canine units, unsuccessfully searched for the suspect.

Each bank robbery charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years' supervised release. Sentencing for Sanchez-Lopez is scheduled for Nov. 5 before U.S. District Court Judge Michael W. Mosman.

As a non-citizen and lawful permanent resident, Sanchez-Lopez's guilty plea will subject him to removal from the United States by immigration authorities, the press release notes.
