Scappoose man charged with sexual assault
Christopher Michael Elliott, 47, was charged for repeated sexual assaults on one victim between 1995 and 2002.
An indictment filed Tuesday, Jan. 28, listed 28 charges, including 14 charges of first-degree sexual abuse.
The victim was five years old when the abuse started, according to Columbia County Deputy District Attorney John Berg.
Elliott was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and transferred to Columbia County the following day.
Bail is currently set at $1.89 million.
Under state law, prosecutors have until the victim turns 30 to file sexual abuse charges if the victim was under 18 years old at the time of the abuse.
"We believe there's other victims, but the statute of limitations has passed," Berg said.
The case was investigated by Det. Dustin King of the St. Helens Police Department.
St. Helens Police Sgt. Jose Castilleja said sexual abuse of children can take a long time to come to light because of the trauma.
"In cases like this, it's really pretty difficult to come forward," Berg said.
Elliott was in a relationship with the victim's family member when the abuse started, Berg said.
