Households expected to receive invitations in mail by March 20; responses can be submitted online, over phone or by mail

COURTESY U.S. CENSUS - The 2020 Census is happening now.Roughly 143 million households in the United States should have received invitations to complete the 2020 Census by March 20. Most of Columbia County will just receive invitations to complete the census online or over the phone, but Clatskanie, Mist-Birkenfeld and surrounding areas will also receive physical copies of the census that can be filled out and returned.

Each household should fill out the census for all occupants of the home, regardless of if the home is shared by family members or roommates.

Sample versions of the census documents are available at census.gov. If you have concerns that the version of the census you received is a scam, you can consult the online version.

The census will ask for information about each person residing in the household, including names, ages, race and ethnicity. It does not ask for social security numbers, citizenship status, bank or credit card information, or money. The information is confidential. Identifiable information is only accessed by census staff.

Completing the census is a legal requirement. Refusing to complete the census can result in a fine of up to $100. Providing false answers on the census can result in a fine up to $500.
