St. Helens High School student recognized for athletics, academics and leadership

Hannah Barber of St. Helens High School is the Elks Teen of the Month for May.

Barber was recognized for her academics, athletics and volunteer work in her school, as well as with the Elks Lodge.

The senior is described as "fearless," and school staff noted she shares her thoughts and opinions with ease, even if they don't align with those of her peers.

"She also is willing to listen and change her mind if she sees merit in what is being said, an attribute that few high school students possess," the Elks Lodge stated in its announcement.

"Hannah is a true role model for SHHS students. Not only was she a driven and resilient athlete, she also was an outstanding student," said Kyle Brayton, a teacher at St. Helens High School. "Early in the semester, Hannah informed me that she doesn't bring her phone to class. She keeps it in her car because she knows it will distract her. Hearing that sort of self-awareness and initiative from a high school student is rare, and is one of the many examples of Hannah's determination to succeed. Furthermore, she was recruited by teachers to reach out to off-track underclassmen — a task she willingly accepted. Hannah helped set those students on the right course with genuine conversations and openness."

Barber plans on attending community college next year to earn an associate's degree in applied science.

"I have always loved participating with the Elks community," Barber said. "Everyone is so kind and generous. I am very appreciative of this recognition."
