Scappoose student, runner dies
Neil Hoffmann, a junior at Scappoose High School, died Saturday, Oct. 10.
A memorial outside the high school entrance following his death included flowers and photos, including one of the school's cross country team. Hoffmann ran cross country in high school and while at Scappoose Middle School.
An online fundraiser organized by Jenna Seagondollar, a friend of Hoffmann, had raised more than $10,000 for funeral expenses and Hoffmann's family as of Oct. 22.
The cause of death has not been shared by the family.
Superintendent Tim Porter notified the district community of Hoffmann's death in a letter to families. In-person and virtual counseling is available for students in the wake of a fellow student's death.
