Winter weather is expected to arrive in the region by late Thursday. Distance learning will continue.

PMG FILE PHOTO - Tim Porter, superintendent of the Scappoose School District, says school buildings will close at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, for the weekend due to winter weather in the forecast. The Scappoose School District says it will close all buildings and cancel school-based activities for the weekend starting at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11.

The school district cited snow and ice in the forecast in making its decision. The closure affects food service and athletic activities as well.

Schools will remain closed Monday, Feb. 15, for Presidents' Day.

Comprehensive distance learning will continue for Friday. Most Scappoose students are still attending virtual classes due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is the first week in which some classes — kindergarten through third grade at Grant Watts and Warren elementary schools — have been held in person and on campus.

Superintendent Tim Porter provided the information about the closure Thursday morning.

Forecasters say a winter storm system will move into the area Thursday afternoon and evening.
