Andrea Jurkiewicz has worked in the assessor's office for roughly 15 years. Jurkiewicz came from a career in banking, but took appraisal courses and was able to put those skills to the test when 2007 floods in the Vernonia area destroyed many homes, according to a county press release.

Jurkiewicz continued earning college credits while working in the assessor's office and eventually advanced to the role of chief appraiser in 2018.

The county board of commissioners appointed Jurkiewicz to the assessor role after soliciting applications from county employees and the public.COURTESY PHOTO: COLUMBIA COUNTY - Columbia County Assessor Sue Martin is retiring this year.

Sue Martin, the current county assessor, was hired as a clerk typist in the assessor's office in 1988, and has worked her way up in various roles over more than three decades.

Martin said in a press release that she doesn't have any specific plans for her retirement. "But I am certainly going to use the additional time to work on various craft projects I enjoy and to spend more time with my granddaughters," she added.

The county assessor is an elected position, but the job is rarely contested. Martin faced no organized opposition on the ballot for years.

The next election will take place in May 2022.
