New principals announced in St. Helens
The St. Helens School District is welcoming two new principals.
Roger Fink joined McBride Elementary School as its full-time principal on Aug. 2. He fills the position vacated by Lisa Tyler, who retired at the end of the 2020-21 school year.
Previously, Fink served within the Hillsboro School District over a period of 18 years. During those years, Fink has been a teacher, a high school coach, and served in administration as dean of students, assistant principal and interim principal.
The district announced that throughout his position as an administrator, Fink performed multiple tasks in the organization and planning of school-wide events such as back-to-school night, parent-teacher conferences, and curriculum exhibitions.
Fink has a strong connection with South Columbia County: He has lived in Scappoose for well over a decade.
"As a 15-year resident of Scappoose, he is proud to call this area his home and shared how it would be an honor to be a leader at McBride," the district said in a statement.
Fink, in the district's announcement, recalled how he initially set in motion his desire to be principal at McBride.
"Before I hit 'send' on the application for principal, I drove my car to the school campus, sat on the swing set, and thought about how I could contribute to the already established McBride community," he said.
The district announcement quoted Superintendent Scot Scotwell as saying, "As a district, we work to recruit and hire the best for our students and our families while keeping the core values of our district at the forefront. Roger brings so much experience and professionalism with him, and we are so excited to have him on our team."
Stockwell continued, "He encompasses the integrity and compassion that we look for and we value his commitment to his students, staff and our district's values and mission."
Over at Lewis and Clark Elementary, Martine Barnett has been hired as interim principal for the 2021-22 school year. She began her new position Aug. 23.
The district announced that Barnett has worked in the St. Helens School District for over 14 years. Prior roles include teaching child development at St. Helens High School, as well as expanding the district's preschool program as director of early learning.
The district quoted Barnett as saying, "There is such amazing work taking place in our district, and specifically at Lewis and Clark as demonstrated through outstanding teaching, the Discovery Garden and summer meals program."
Barnett continued, "I know we can create our own sunshine and provide our students with a warm and welcoming environment that radiates with the care and connection our students need now more than ever. From what I know of the Lewis and Clark staff already, this work comes naturally for them because they have a heart for learning and for the children of our community."
Stockwell said, "It is so rewarding to be able to hire a district employee who shows such integrity and compassion for their work, students, and our district's values and mission."
