The Scappoose School District says it plans to resume in-person learning after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

PMG FILE PHOTO - Otto Petersen Elementary School is closed Friday, Jan. 14, due to a high number of ill staff and students.A "significant number" of illnesses, including COVID-19, among students and staff has prompted the Scappoose School District to close Otto Petersen Elementary School at least for a day.

The school is closed Friday, Jan. 14, with plans for it to be open again Tuesday, Jan. 18, district executive assistant and board secretary Julie Hinkle said.

Monday, Jan. 17, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Classes are not scheduled for that day, which is a federal holiday.

Schools in the neighboring St. Helens School District are also temporarily closed due to COVID-19 circulating among students and staff.

Several other Portland-area school districts, including Portland Public Schools, have also announced temporary closures, mainly due to staffing shortages.
