A birthday bash for longtime resident Millie Gobel was held Tuesday at Brookdale Rose Valley.

That's the philosophy of longtime Scappoose resident Millie Gobel, who just turned 101 years old.

Residents and friends of Gobel attended her birthday party in the lobby of the Brookdale Rose Valley assisted living center in Scappoose on Tuesday, May 3.

Gobel was delighted at the number of friends, family and admirers who showed up.

She told the Spotlight, "I think these people are crazy. I don't know how I can appreciate enough what they have done."

Asked what her thoughts were on longevity, Gobel answered, "We can appreciate the people we have in our lives and appreciate what they have done, and what we have done together."

She added, "Never look back. Always look forward and try to make something of yourself, too, doing what helps other people."

Julie Moore has been Gobel's caregiver for years. She said she visits her just about every night.

"I've known Millie since I was about 16 years old," Moore said. "She was always there to mentor me and just to love on me. I did not see Millie until 40 years later, and I became her caregiver."

Moore continued, "She is wise. She keeps very active. She reads, she crochets, she does everything and that's what keeps her going."

Gobel's youngest grandchild, Rachael Bennett, was happy to see Gobel enjoying the festivities.

"My grandma and my grandpa were really big in my life," Bennett said. "I grew up right next door to them and I basically was with them a lot through my childhood. I've learned a lot of my life lessons from them. My grandma has always told me to not to sweat the small things. That's her quote, and it's true."

Gobel, who moved from Nebraska many years ago and has been living in the Scappoose area ever since, moved into Brookdale at the end of December.

Quite coincidentally, Gobel was born the same year — 1921 — that Scappoose was incorporated as a city. The city celebrated its centennial last summer.
