St. Helens' municipal website has been offline since at least Monday, May 9.
City officials notified community members on Tuesday, May 10, that they're working on a technical issue that is making it hard to contact City Hall. The email system is also down.
Researching the outage, St. Helens' IT staff discovered that the issue was occurring with the company that provides the city's domain registrar service, according to a newsletter Tuesday.
"Monday evening, that company announced that they were hit with a ransomware attack which encrypted server disk files that impacted domain registrar service to their customers," the newsletter added.
The attack, according to city officials, did not directly impact any information, files, emails or citizen information hosted on the city network.
While the company is working with cybersecurity and digital forensic experts, the newsletter added, it's not known when service will be restored.
"St. Helens data is still safe and secure," the newsletter said. "Our IT staff is working diligently on temporary workarounds to restore our local service, however, it is not as simple as immediately switching to a new company."
The city will provide updates on its social media channels.
