Appreciative of Baker's time on PUD board

This is a letter of appreciation for all the good work done by Dave Baker as board member at the Columbia River People's Utility District over the course of the last 16 years.

During the last few years of that period, the PUD has been troubled by the polices of the dominant group on the board and by various managers, which has led to a number of lawsuits against the PUD, the refusal of its insurance company to provide further coverage, and the cost to ratepayers of vast attorney fees.

Faced with these problems, Dave has been active in trying to get the PUD back on track and to keep the public informed of what's going on. This has not made him popular with the dominant group, whose members have made life difficult for Dave.

Yet, this has never stopped Dave from being a good and active representative of the public. We honor his good work, and we lift a glass in honor of Dave.

Wood raffle helps local veterans

Cold enough for you? Looking at a heating bill that rocks the Christmas budget?

The Veterans of Foreign Wars are holding another wood raffle, and someone in town will be the winner of several cords of split and dry firewood provided by "Comfort Construction." Mark Comfort is once again contributing to the VFW, allowing us to raise funds to assist needy veterans right here in our community. Those funds go to needy veterans to help with bills and other needs that are so numerous this time of year with the Christmas season and adverse weather making life difficult for too many of our veterans. Funds also go to sponsor legislation to promote the improvements needed at the VA hospitals and counseling centers.

The truckload of wood will be parked in the Grocery Outlet parking lot where the management has graciously allowed the VFW valuable parking space and an area to set up our table to take donations. Community businesses helping the VFW raise funds. Thank you both to Comfort Construction and to the management of Grocery Outlet.

Look for us on Friday, Jan. 13, and Saturday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the drawing at 6 p.m. Saturday. The winner will get a phone call that evening and the wood will be delivered on Sunday, Jan. 15.

It's not Megabucks folks, but it'll heat your home! One dollar a ticket or six for $5. Someone local wins. The last winner bought two tickets.

To the Scappoose Historical Society: You're welcome

Our thanks to Rose and Courtney at the Spotlight for all their help in getting the word out about the tours and events at the Watts House this Christmas season.

There are many people in Scappoose who had never heard of the Watts House prior to this year. With the advertising and articles in the Spotlight, we feel many more people are now aware of us.

Again, our thanks for all you have done. We sincerely appreciate it.
