Scappoose wins the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove, setting a new school record in the boys' 4x100 relay

In case anyone needed a little extra convincing as to the strength of Scappoose’s candidacy for the boys’ track and field state title, the Indians posted another solid argument.

Scappoose won the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove on Friday evening, putting up 99 points to beat out Elmira and Crook County.

And once again, the boys 4x100 meter relay team finished with another school record, setting the bar even higher for the third time this season. Jarrett White, Nick Rust, Matt Shoun and Justice Oman ran the short relay in 43.04 seconds, good for about a fifth of a second faster than their previous mark. The 1600 meter relay was another first place for Scappoose, but their time was just short of the time set at the Jesuit Twilight Relays that still stands as the fastest time in the state of Oregon.

The 4x100 relay team wasn’t the only lightning-quick event for Scappoose. Rust, White and Braden Clark each PRed in the 100 meter race, taking third, sixth and eighth. Oman and Rust got new career-best marks in the 200 as well.

Oman and Shoun finished off an impressive showing for Scappoose in the sprints, taking first and second in the 400 meters, and Senior Mychal Hortert set a new lifetime PR to finish fifth.

In the 1,500, which junior Dan Carrier has dominated at times this season, the Indians picked up a fifth place finish. Carrier was little more than a half-second off his career best of 4:15.30, running his best time in nearly a month.

Scappoose had just two jumpers reached the finals. Senior Kyle Nickel finished 10th in the pole vault, jumping 10-6 in his second scored meet of the season, while junior Joey Krupsky jumped a season-best 37-8 to take seventh in the triple jump.

Kenny Klippel continued his impressive senior season in the throws, winning both the shot put and discus competitions. Just two days after setting a new PR in the discus on May 7, Klippel tossed a rocket in the shot put, throwing over 50 feet for the first time in his career with a mark of 50 feet, 9 inches. He put up a mark of 147-5 to win the discus event.

The girls’ team took ninth out of 14 teams, but had several individual highlights. Senior Nicole Andreotti put up her best career time in the 100 meters and the Indians got a 59.82 from senior Charlie Davidson in the 400 for first place, her first sub-60 time of the season. Sophomore Eleanor Jones took third in the 100 meter hurdles and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles, coming less than half a second away from setting new season PRs in both events.

The 4x100 meter relay team continued their success as well, posting a 52.20 for their second-fastest time of the year. Jones, Andreotti, Haley Wight and Alix Raya sit just barely outside of the state’s top 10 teams in the event, needing three tenths of a second to break into the list.

A shuffled team of Wight, Jones, Davidson and Abby Kessi took second place in the 4x400 meter relay, also for their second-best mark of the season.

Raya, the lone placer for the Indian girls in the jumping events, lept just short of her career best in the long jump, placing second with a jump of 15-9.75.

Scappoose will send members of their junior varsity team to the Cowapa League JV invite at Banks High School on Monday, May 12 before traveling to Yamhill-Carlton for the Cowapa League championships on May 15 and 16. Scappoose will enter as the easy favorite on the boys’ side, with the girls’ challenge too close to call.
