Astoria girls hold off late Scappoose charge
Scappoose brought the heat in the second half against visiting Astoria in Cowapa League action on Tuesday, but the Fishermen stayed afloat, 33-25.
Kaylie Kopra led the Indians (4-11 overall, 0-3 Cowapa) with nine points as Scappoose outscored Astoria (9-8, 2-1) 16-9 in the final two quarters. Lea Brodala scored seven points in the evening.
Astoria senior and returning all-league post Chloee Hunt led the Fishermen with 11 points.
The Indians, nonetheless, have taken five of the last seven games in the series.
Brianna Smith scored all of her 10 points in the fourth quarter against ninth-ranked Cowapa League rival Valley Catholic on Friday, Jan. 22, in Beaverton, but the Valiants won 63-29.
Kendal Bailey added eight points for the Indians (4-10 overall, 0-2 Cowapa), who scored 14 points in the final frame.
Senior post and returning all-conference pick Molly Danielson led the Valiants (13-3, 2-0) with 19 points.
Valley Catholic was the Class 3A state runner-up before finishing fifth at state last year in its first Class 4A season.
Scappoose is scheduled to host Tillamook, against which the Indians have split the last four contests, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
