Wheeler, who will be a Scappoose High senior in September, improved on his 3.121-second ride that won the Oregon High School Equestrian Teams state championship with a first-place 3.08 at the Pacific Northwest Invitational Championship June 18-20 in Moses Lake, Wash.

He went 1.57 in the first run and 1.51 in the second.

"My first run was awesome," Wheeler said. "Lace [Wheeler's quarter horse] did a good job putting me where I needed to be. After the first round I was in third as I thought to myself, 'Keep your head together,' and, as my grandpa would say, 'Let's put one together.'"

Wheeler was one of 11 all-stars to reach the PNWIC steer daubing, in which a rider attempts to pull up next to a steer and place a mark of paint inside a circle on its side.

"Definitely two of my best runs I have put together," Wheeler said. "I would like to say a big thanks to Bart and Janet Grabhorn for letting me use such amazing horses, and to my grandparents and mother for supporting me and helping me to get the where I have made it."

He also set the all-time OHSET Northwest District breakaway roping record in this year's third meet at the Yamhill County Fairgrounds in McMinnville.

Sam Barlow's Savannah Storlie's first go of 1.3 was a PNWIC record that she followed with a 5.35 for a fifth-place 6.65.
