Lions seniors getting set to challenge Sandy in Northwest Oregon Conference

SPOTLIGHT PHOTO: JAKE MCNEAL - Junior Sean Lee resists a takedown from freshman Mavrick Rask in practice Tuesday, Nov. 21, at St. Helens High School.

Who will be this winter's Class 5A state-qualifying Lions?

Tyler Neubaum is a sophomore back from fifth at 120 pounds in the Northwest Oregon Conference last winter and junior Sean Lee wrestled to sixth at 160, so St. Helens fields competitors willing to end Sandy's two-year conference reign after all five state-bound Lions graduated.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone has improved as well as seeing what potential the younger guys will bring to the team," said Robert Landreth, a senior (145) with William Webb (145), Cody Leanna (182), Quinlynn Coddington (182), Caleb Carter (285) and Patisepa Tuai.

Ryan Burri (170), a sophomore, is a captain with Webb.

"Caleb is back at heavyweight as a senior after an injury that kept him out last year; other than that we are very young," second-year Lions coach Greg Gadbois said.

Lee is down to 152 this time around.

"I'm excited to go against smaller guys," said Lee, who was a varsity/junior varsity swing player as a sophomore. "I've been cutting weight for two weeks, and it was fun to look at the younger guys with an emphasis on coming to practice and conditioning for three days over Thanksgiving."

The Lions' first opportunity is their opener, the Tillamook Smoker scheduled to include Class 3A third-place Dayton and the Class 4A sixth-place Cheesemakers, is set for noon Friday.

"[It will be] my first 182 match this week, and my speed and quickness will come in handly," Leanna said. "We will have a young team competing this year, but we have been practicing hard to see what Friday has to bring."

SEASON OUTLOOK: Sandy, Milwaukie and Hillsboro are back from fifth, seventh and 10th in the state to give St. Helens plenty to think about, but preeminence fluctuates as Sandy, Milwaukie and Hillsboro must replace four, two and six state seniors.
