Ethan Hubbs is the Lions' first champion of the new season.

The sophomore, after Class 2A/1A Neah-Kah-Nie second-year Austin Dunn withdrew with a quarterfinal injury, pinned Class 6A Forest Grove junior Andres Echeverria-Gonzalez in three semifinal minutes and made quick work of Central sophomore Ty Pearson in 17 seconds for the title at the Tillamook Smoker Invitational Friday, Dec. 1.

"Ethan has been working very hard during both the preseason and during the season to improve his ability to attack on his feet, which paid off at this weekends tournament," St. Helens coach Greg Gadbois said. "He is determined to continue to improve, and is a huge asset to the program, also volunteering at the kids' wrestling club three days a week."

In third for St. Helens were Shawn Lee, who beat Class 3A Dayton sophomore Kody Fuller for 13-9 for third at 152, and Caleb Carter, who got the better of Neah-Kah-Nie junior Travis Jonsson in :10.

Coming up fifth were Willie Webb (145) with a pin of Forest Grove senior Esaias Castaneda-Cortez in 1:10, Ryan Burri (170), who pinned Class 3A Amity sophomore Russell Brown in :03, and Benjamin Torres (285), who survived Forest Grove junior Julius Jones 6-3 for fifth.

Trevor Cissney (195) fell to Central sophomore Corbin Sedlacek in :38 for sixth.

Tillamook ran away with 272.5 points ahead of runner-up Central (135.5) and Class 3A Willamina as St. Helens (87) emerged fourth in the 11-team field.

"I was very happy with our fourth-place performance," Gadbois said. "Since the majority of our kids are first-year wrestlers or freshmen and they competed in the separate novice tournament, we went into the tournament short-handed at the varsity level with only seven point-scorers out of 14 weight classes. Those seven wrestled extremely well, winning six out of seven placing matches with Ethan in first."

The Lions are scheduled next for the Springfield Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
