Sophomore and senior second at 106, 170 pounds as 16 Indians place in Estacada

     - - AJ DeGrande and Jack Eggers were runners-up and the foremost of 16 Indians who placed at the Ranger Classic Saturday, Dec. 2, at Estacada High School.

The sophomore 106-pounder and 170-pound senior helped Scappoose rack up 140 points for fourth behind La Grande (191), Class 5A Sandy (179) and Washougal, Wash. (152).

DeGrande received first-round and quarterfinal byes before he pinned Estacada freshman Landin Vittetoe in 44 seconds and fell 4-2 to Heritage (Vancouver, Wash.) junior Sanry Nguyen.

"I was excited with the way that our entire team competed over the weekend, they showed a lot of heart and desire to improve," Tribe coach Nick Byrd said. "Jack and AJ both competed well on their way to second place and were in close matches against quality opponents in the finals. They both have some things they need to work on in order to take the next step. It was good to compete against some top level teams, and it gave us a better idea of what we need to improve upon to get ready for February."

Eggers went unopposed in the opening round, then beat Seaside junior Christopher Avery by 17-2 quarterfinal technical fall and pinned Estacada senior Justin Drury in 2 minutes, 32 seconds, but La Grande sophomore Nathan Reed claimed the championship 9-6.

The Indians opened the season in third place Friday, Dec. 1, at the Ron James Round Robin Tournament at Hillsboro High School, falling 37-30 to the Class 5A host Spartans and 55-18 to Class 6A Century before they beat Class 6A Barlow 50-18.

Scappoose is scheduled next for the Muilenburg Tournament Friday and Saturday in La Grande.

St. Helens girls' basketball falls at No. 10 Dallas

I was really proud of the girls for how they competed for the whole 32 minutes. We are going to get back to work and focus on improving."
